The ocean is the calm, warm, turquoise waters of Mediterranean Sea. It is cold and dark. It is warm and inviting. For many, the ocean represents the fear of the unknown. For others, it is the embodiment of freedom and life.
In Greek mythology, Thalassa is the primordial goddess of the sea. She is part of the origin of life, much like Gaia. She is the female complement to Pontus, who is the son of Gaia herself.
And like many of us, Thalassa can be dark and angry, or she can be warm and inviting. She, too, has good days and bad. She can be the giver of life, or the harbinger of death. She is angry and violent with a hurricane, or tranquil and gentle as she tickles your toes as you sit on the beaches of the many islands throughout the Aegean Sea. Thalassa must be respected, for she has more power than you could possibly know.
When you light this candle, let Thalassa's gentle and tranquil side envelope your senses.
Turquoise waters, sandy beaches, and peaceful breezes will be on your mind as this clean and ethereal scent transports you to Santorini, and the beauty and power of Thalassa...the sea.
In Greek mythology, Gaia is known as the mother of all life, the one from whom all others were born. She is considered the earth mother and the mother of all other Greek deities. The Sky and the Sea are said to have been born of Gaia. She was a loving mother to her children, and, like many of us, was fiercely protective of them. She is known for her maternal instinct, and she is the elemental power of fertility, maternal love, and creation.
When you light this candle, let its earthy, clean scent evoke a sense of calm and peace. Take time for yourself, if even for a moment out of your busy day, and breath the cleansing scent in. Let Gaia take your hand and feel her maternal love through the scent of this wonderful candle.
You're sitting on the beach looking over the tranquil waters of the Aegean Sea, soaking in the warmth and beauty of the Greek Isles. Suddenly, a cool breeze touches your skin and lifts your hair, cooling you and causing goosebumps to prickle across your skin. You've been touched by Meltemi...
In Greek mythology, the Meltemi winds were believed to have been sent by Zeus to provide a respite from the hot summer temperatures the Greek islands are so well known for. Zeus was bothered by the severe drought that the island of Rhodes was experiencing. He wanted to help, so he sent the Meltemi winds to bring rain to the island. After 40 days of rain, the island was covered in flowers.
When you light this candle, the scent will transport you to Rhodes, covered in flowers, the warm salty air the cool Meltemi breezes, and perhaps the echo of Zeus' touch.
When you think of fire, do you think a bonfire by the beach on a warm summer evening? Do you think s'mores and camping and ghost stories? Or perhaps it's a fine bottle of wine, a crackling fireplace on a snowy evening, and the reflection of the flames dancing in the eyes of your lover, with the promise of what's to come?
Fotia means fire in Greek, and in Greek mythology, Prometheus is oftentimes considered the God of Fire.
Prometheus, being strong willed and brave, stole the fire from Olympus to give to humanity. This angered Zeus, the king of all the gods of Olympus, and Zeus punished Prometheus for his defiant act.
Though Prometheus was punished terribly, he never regretted having stolen the fire from the gods and giving it to the people he so loved. Fire is life - it's warmth in the cold, and it's light in the dark.
Prometheus gave the people warmth and light, and is a hero in the eyes of many, for without fire, there is no life.
When you light this candle, hints of musk and sandalwood will envelope your senses. Watch the flames dance and let it's seductive, alluring scent bring to mind crackling fire, fine wine, and that Greek god who defied Zeus to bring it to you.
